The Best View Ever

The Best View Ever

I visited Lily today. I hadn’t seen her since I took her up to Tired Dog Ranch earlier this month. She is doing well, happy and healthy. I scratched all her favorite spots, gave her all the hugs and hellos from friends and just hung out with her. Then I hopped up (well, I had to use an overturned feed tub for a mounting block.) and she gave me a tour of her pasture. At first I steered her with my legs, but then let her take me where she wanted. I found out that she prefers to drink from the seasonal pond, rather than the stock tank. She likes to put her feet in the water and goes around to the back side of the pond to stand on the soft earth and watch the other horses. She also likes to be in with her friends, Lola, Abigail, and Gary. They were all very curious about why I was up there.

She still stops on my cue, mostly. I felt totally secure and safe on her, even with no halter, lead, rope or saddle. We’ve done this on and off over the last few years, but I usually use a neck rope of some sort. And I am also usually in an enclosed area, not a five acre pasture with other horses. It was a joyful feeling to be astride Lily once more. I am honored to have this trust in her and she in me. I hope that we are able to enjoy this partnership for many years to come.
