Happy Girls

Happy Girls

Today I sat on Bonita for the first time. I am grateful that it was uneventful! We walked a few times around the arena, stopping and turning. I got on and off from both sides and all was fine. She had some small issues with balance, but that will improve with practice. I also found that she may have something out in her back, so a chiropractic call may be in order. I think that our five weeks of ground work has paid off.

Walking on...

Walking on...

Second, I am grateful to my friend, Pam, for coming out and being my moral support, helping Bonita to walk out when she stalled and generally being there. She also gave Vinnie a good grooming and some much appreciated attention.

On other fronts, I won’t be off on Fridays anymore. That was short-lived. Instead, I have a few more responsibilities at work to take up that time. On the plus side, I will be able to practice some of the project management skills I just finished learning in my PMI study group and build up more hours towards applying for PMP certification. While I’ll have less horse time, I will also be working towards what interests me in my job. I am grateful for that too.

Gratitude creates it’s own attitude. It can give you a new perspective, a new focus. I am going to use this day as my opportunity to see those things.

Take a few minutes today to create your own Thankful Thursday.

How:

  • Sit back and consider what you have to be thankful for. Listing three to five things is nice, but one will do.
  • Post about gratitude on your blog. If you don’t have your own blog, go ahead and write about what you are thankful for in the comments here instead.
  • If you blog, please link back here or leave a comment.
  • Feel free to tag other bloggers, if you like to do that, but it’s not necessary. This is not a meme that obligates you to do anything, but look for gratitude. Oh, and link back, and comment, that’s all I ask.

Monday – Today was a simple, boring lunge session as planned.

Saturday – My left knee has been bothering me today, so I wasn’t up for a full lunging session. Instead, I gave Bonita some time tied in the indoor. Then I worked on her standing while being saddled. This was followed by some simple ground work, yielding, ground tying, etc. I have a flag, about three foot square. I brought that out and worked on some desensitizing with clicker rewards. Bonita was wide eyed, but stood well after a few tries. I flapped the flag on her neck, over the saddle and her rump. I had her walk with it on her, letting it fall off a few times. She was fine with that. It is always the anticipation of being touched that bothered her the most. Once the flag was touching her, she didn’t think that it was too bad. I’ll continue this until she’s really okay with the whole thing.

    From a few weeks ago

No new photos this week, so this is from a few weeks ago.

Sunday – I came to the conclusion that Bonita didn’t really need more boring lunging sessions. What she really needs is to trust me and get more of a bond going. I think that will help her in all other areas. I started on that yesterday. Today, I spent a long time grooming her slowly, working out as much loose, winter coat as possible. She’s not too crazy about being groomed. Lily and Vinnie enjoy vigorous grooming, so I’ve had to adjust my style with Bonita. I work more slowly and gently. She does have spots that she likes me working on, but is more sensitive to being curried or brushed hard and fast. I’ll continue to work slowly and thoroughly on her, as it’s fun to see the darker grulla coat starting to show!

Once saddled, we went to the indoor. I had watered it earlier, so the dust was somewhat controlled. I brought Vinnie in and tied him to give Bonita some companionship and reassurance. This was good for Vinnie too, as he took about 20 minutes before settling down to stand quietly. I’ll have to continue to include him in our sessions.

I worked with Bonita on backing in hand. She’s been pretty dull to my aids with this, so I wanted to clarify to her what I meant and sharpen her responses. We worked forward and back, until there was improvement and she consistently stayed out of my space. Then the flag/tarp came out with more repetition from yesterday, but no treats today. She was wide eyed again, but would lower her head when asked with some good sighs.

Next the cavesson with reins on the side rings went on. I practiced flexing her head to the side both ways with me standing on both sides. This has improved, with less foot movement. Then we moved on to the mounting block. I don’t want to get stuck on groundwork, so I’m starting to lay over the saddle. Today, she accepted my full weight from both sides. I pat her everywhere I can reach, focusing mostly on where my leg will fall. She only walked off a couple of times, but was fine with it the next time. I moved around and bounced a bit too, which she was fine with.

I’m going to hold off sitting on her, until I have a helper or two lined up. This was a good week for me, as I am resolved to continue to move forward with her. I guess I had a bit of a crisis of confidence last week. Riding Lily made me realize that I need to develop more of a bond with Bonita and win her trust. I had been holding back on that…

Yesterday was fun! We had a guest visit from out of town and she came out to see Vin. Gurunam had fun showing what Vinnie can do and what fun it is to play with him.

You can swing the hula hoop around his neck or body and he could care less.

She also has him playing yo-yo with the barrel.

Before that, we had lunged him. I wanted to see if Paisano’s harness would fit him. Vin has to grow a bit more, as it was up on the top holes and not snug enough.

He is starting to show his color, now that parts of him are finally shed out. He has tons of roaning all over, making him a peachy pink color. I am so looking forward to watching this little guy grow up.

What is my ultimate goal in this life? It’s the age old question of why we are here. I’ve been thinking about that lately. I mean, really, what is the point of what we do every day? Yes, there are the day to day things, going to work, making a living, cooking dinner, feeding the dog, opening the mail, paying bills and on and on…

Is it looking up at the sky, like I did this evening and seeing the most wondrous blending of rose and turquiose in slim tendrils as the sun glanced off the low cloud cover? Is it sitting close on the couch with my son and talking about the day? Or breathing in the heady smells of spring? For me it is these things, but even more so, it is working to elevate my consciousness to notice and appreciate them.

Today, I am grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from my teacher; to be given the technology of kundalini yoga, meditation, the gift of the Shabd Guru. My name means, “One who meditates with every breath.” There are times when I forget that. Remembering and doing that brings me back to myself. I am thankful that I have that to guide me, to keep me on track.

    Seven Steps to Happiness
from Yogi Bhajan’s, “The Game of Love

    1. COMMITMENT to kindness and compassion gives you Character.

    2. CHARACTER is a pattern of behavior where you can clearly answer to, and stand before, your own consciousness. It leads to Dignity.

    3. DIGNITY is when you act as a god for another – then you gain Divinity.

    4. DIVINITY is when you put yourself and your life on the line to serve another person or creature, which leads you to Grace.

    5. GRACE is when you’ve developed a presence that works so that you have the Power to Sacrifice.

    6. SACRIFICE is when God sits in your heart and presides in your head so that you are able to sacrifice – and that takes you to Happiness.

    7. HAPPINESS is when you can give thanks for being these seven things.

Gratitude creates it’s own attitude. It can give you a new perspective, a new focus. I am going to use this day as my opportunity to see those things.

This week’s Macro Monday is a guest feature. These are photos by my daughter, Gurunam Atwal, playing with her new DSLR. Who knew our front yard contained all these interesting images? Click for a larger view.
